2011 state meet evaluation -- historical perspective

boys teams (overall):
-The fastest teams, Trabuco Hills and Arcadia, were 11th & 14th fastest of all time. They were the only 2 teams to finish with a sigma* < -1,96. Compared to recent years, this was a relatively low yield (there were 7 in 2010, 5 in 2009, and 5 in 2008). They were also the only 2 teams to finish in the 99th percentile. There had been 6 in 2010, 3 in 2009, and 5 in 2008.

girls teams (overall):
-Saugus ran the 13th fastest time of all-time. No teams finished with a sigma* z = < -1,96. Four teams finished within the 99th percentile, Saugus (S.S., 1:31:52), la Costa Canyon (S.D.S., 1:32:02), Redondo Union (S.S., 1:32:19) and Simi Valley (S.S., 1:32:25).

boys individuals (overall):
-17 boys ran well enough to be in the 99th percentile (15:23), 15 to be in z = < -1.96 (15:22).

girls individuals (overall):
-17 girls ran well enough to be in the 99th percentile (0:17:55), 25 to be in z = < -1.96 (0:17:56). Sarah Baxter (Simi Valley) ran the 10th fastest time of all-time (0:17:08, record by Julia Stamps, gr. 12, Santa Rosa, N.C.S., d. 1, 0:16:43).

-The fastest teams ran the 28th - 30th fastest times of all time (San Clemente, Vista Murrieta, Marina (Huntington Beach)), all between 1:33:39 & 1:33:51. Before 2007 these would have all been top 10 times.

boys individual (d. 1):
-The typical d. 1 race has a median time of 0:16:45. The 2011 median was 0:16:36, the 7th fastest year on record. The record, 0:16:18, was set in 2010. The class breakdown was very close to historical norms (4,3% gr. 09, 16,5% gr. 10, 34,0% gr. 11, 45,2% gr. 12). Only the gr. 11 class was slower than historical norms (0:16:39 v. 0:16:46).

-Palos Verdes (S.S., 1:33:27), Vista del Lago (Folsom) (S.J.S., 1:33:53) and Campolindo (N.C.S., 1:34:03) ran the 9th, 10th & 12th fastest d. 3 times of all-time. This is the S.J.S.'s first appearance in the top 10 of d. 3.

-The medians in d. 3 are typically in line with the overall median at the state-meet -- 0:17:09. The 2011 median was 0:17:04, tied for 6th fastest all-time. The record median, 0:16:42, was set in 2010. The gr. 9 & gr. 10 classes were under-representated in 2011 (4,8% & 13,9%) and the gr. 11 & gr. 12 classes over-represented (34,6% & 46,6%). The gr. 9 class underperformed (0:18:18), the gr. 10 & gr. 11 classes performed at par (0:17:21 & 0:17:09) and the gr. 12 class ran very well (0:16:49 v. a historical norm of 0:16:56).
